Study Skills through Student Support Services

Student Support Services offers a one-credit course in Study Skills (Education 120). It may be taken for credit or non-credit. This class provides students assistance in the development of study skills necessary for academic achievement through learning and practice. The class normally meets for a two-hour session once aweek, at a meeting time arranged with the instructor. Student Support Services supplies the text books and instructional materials. The course includes pre-testing and post-testing, using the Learning and Study Skills Strategies Inventory (LASSI). Study Skills is also available during the summer.

Study Skills covers time management, principles of learning and memory, analyzing one's learning style, understanding content--sentences, paragraphs, and thought patterns in text books--and active reading. Participants in the course also practice outline, note-taking, summary, use of sources, strategies for preparing for tests, vocabulary enhancement, and use of context clues. The course will emphasize reading efficiency, writing skills, and critical thinking.
