Reading Improvement

Each semester Student Support Services offers a one-credit course in Improvement of Reading (Education 121). This is a developmental reading program designed to help students improve reading efficiency. It may be taken for credit or non-credit. The class normally meets for a two-hour session once a week at a meeting time arranged with the instructor. Student Support Services supplies the text books and instructional materials. The course includes pre-testing and post-testing, using the Nelson-Denny Reading Test (Forms E and F). The course is also offered during the summer.

Reading improvement covers the physiology of reading, expanded word recognition and vocabulary utilization, context clues, comprehension, and retention. A number of in-class exercises enable students more quickly to grasp word, phrase, and sentence meanings with additional emphasis on ideas and critical thinking. Most students who take the course signficantly improve their reading efficiency.
