SMALL GRANT PROJECT CATEGORY DESCRIPTIONS

With Maximum Funding Levels

Individual mini projects

$300
Individuals requesting up to $300 may submit a mini project application form. This project should support improvement of one staff member's ability to perform professional duties.

Examples: Attending a local workshop or course, travel to another university to consult with its staff, and resource materials.

For the three project categories below, use the
Major Project Proposal Format

Individual major projects

$1,000

An individual requesting between $300 and $1,000 may submit a proposal that supports improvement of her/his ability to perform professional duties. Projects must give evidence of substantial professional development efforts by the staff member. The proposal must demonstrate that the project surpasses traditional expectations for professional development.

Examples: A staff member attends an out-of town workshop, seminar, conference, or convention and then uses the information learned to improve the manner by which his/her work responsibilities are performed.

Intra- and Inter-Departmen/Unit projects

$3,000
This category of grants gives departments/units the opportunity to design significant projects to improve the skills of staff members within and/or across particular departments or units. If feasible, all staff members in a particular department/unit should be involved in the planning and execution of the project.

Examples: Staff members travel to a conference and upon their return, pass along the information learned to other classified staff members in their unit(s). Staff members produce an instructional videotape for their unit(s).

Projects with campus-wide applicability

$3,000
These broader scope projects are directed at benefiting staff across the campus through involvement in the project activities or through the use of the project results. Projects of this would center on enhancing staff members' skills or understanding in communication, leadership, technical, or work-specific areas. Although one person may be responsible for directing the project, it is recommended that a colleague group of staff and/or faculty collaborate on the project's development and implementation.

Examples: Bringing in a national speaker to NDSU for all classified staff. Funding a certain number of staff members to attend a conference or workshop (i.e., a $1,000 grant would fund twenty staff members at $50 per person.)
