American Indians are North Dakota's largest minority at 5.8 percent of the state's population in 2005, and North Dakota has the 6th largest proportion of American Indians in the nation. There were an estimated 36,986 North Dakotans who considered themselves all or partly Native American in 2005. This number has increased from 25,917, or 4.0 percent, in 1990. In the United States, the proportion of the population who is Native American grew from 1.0 percent in 1990 to 1.5 percent in 2005 (U.S. Census Bureau).
