Commerce Department to become the state’s official source for state demographic information
BISMARCK, N.D. – North Dakota Commerce Commissioner Al Anderson announced today that the Commerce Department will become the state’s official source for state demographic information through a partnership with the U.S. Census Bureau. Richard Rathge, a North Dakota State University researcher who has managed the data services for more than 30 years, is assisting the transition of services to the Commerce Department as he plans his retirement.
“Richard has played a prominent role in linking North Dakota to information that helps us better understand the nation and state we live in,” Anderson said. “We very much appreciate Richard’s 30 years of dedicated service and we are committed to carrying on the state’s partnership with the U.S. Census Bureau.”
In 1981, Rathge was appointed director of the State Data Center by former Governor Allen Olson.
The North Dakota Census Office within the Commerce Department will serve as the state’s liaison to the U.S. Census Bureau and will be the state repository of census information. The Census Office will assist in U.S. Census reporting, interpret data and respond to public requests for demographic information.
Rathge conducts other university research, but only U.S. Census Bureau functions will be transferred to the Department of Commerce. Anderson said Paul Govig, deputy director of the Commerce Department, will serve as director of the state Census Office in Bismarck. Kevin Iverson, a former research analyst with North Dakota Job Service and a former state liaison to the U.S. Census Bureau, will manage the state Census Office’s daily operations. The transfer of state data services to Commerce is expected to be completed by February 1, 2012.
