Funding Opportunities :: Faculty Travel Awards

- Sponsored by the NDSU Office of Research, Creative Activities and Technology Transfer and ND-EPSCoR

Instructions

To apply for funding, please click on the application form below after reading the following guidelines. The completed application form with attachments must be received by the Office of Research, Creative Activities and Technology Transfer, Research 1 bldg., BEFORE the travel takes place.

Matching funds are provided for faculty to travel for various research-related purposes. This support is intended to be an investment in a faculty member's ability to establish and continue in a long-term research program at NDSU. The program attempts to provide financial assistance for as many research-related requests as possible. However, because of limited funds, not all meritorious requests can be funded; or they may be funded at less than the level requested (see priorities indicated with the categories below). Applications must be submitted before the travel takes place. Applications are accepted at any time; however, an individual may receive only one award per fiscal year per category below.

NEW as of July 2006 - clarification of program priorities:
Due to the increasing number of applications, and in an effort to make the best use of the funds available, the following emphases and changes to the current guidelines will be effective immediately. Priority will be given to those who represent the best investment of funds and those who will likely generate a return on investment in the form of future grants.

1. Applications by new faculty (tenure-track, five years or less at NDSU) are considered a top priority.
2. Faculty awards in Categories A, B, C, and D will be given highest priority. Please note below the travel purposes for those categories.
3. Additionally, those who receive A, B, C, and D awards will need to submit, along with their reimbursement request, a one-page report explaining if their meetings were helpful and their objective met - in order for payment of the award to be made.
4. Established faculty who have not submitted a grant proposal in the past three fiscal years will not be given priority for an award.

Who is eligible to apply?

NDSU employees holding faculty rank, i.e., 1. tenured, 2. tenure-track, 3. special appointment faculty, or 4. special long-term appointment as it pertains to Experiment Station and Extension employees, are eligible to apply.

Priority is given in the following order: 1. Assistant professors or new faculty attempting to establish a new research program, 2. Individuals who regularly submit grant proposals, 3. Individuals who continue to publish their research. Visiting faculty are not eligible to apply.

Graduate and undergraduate students, postdocs, and research associates may apply for matching support through a separate program if they will be traveling to present a paper or poster representing NDSU research - see Non-Faculty Travel Awards.

What activities are supported?

Funds are awarded for travel related to research and creative activities only and not for administrative or teaching-related travel. Funds are NOT normally awarded for travel to actually "conduct" a research project. Rather, these funds are intended to help lay the groundwork for future successful research. In general, travel which will contribute to an individual's professional research-related development and increase his/her chances of obtaining external funding are considered.

Financial support is provided for activities under categories a., b., c., and d., with highest priority given in those categories providing the most support. Awards under these categories will match, on a 2:1 basis, funds from other university sources (i.e., at least one-third of support must first be committed from department, college, grant, etc.), with approval of that commitment indicated by an authorizing signature at the bottom of the application form. Requests falling within these categories must be adequately justified, with sufficient information provided to assess the value of the travel in terms of benefit to NDSU:

a. Travel to visit with specific program officers at funding agencies (includes federal agencies, private foundations, industry, etc.) Up to $750
b. Travel to meet with a specific industrial contact
regarding technology transfer activity
Up to $750
c. Travel to facilitate creative activities and grants in the humanities or fine arts Up to $750
d. Travel to assist in preparation of a collaborative proposal to a funding agency (with NDSU as lead institution) Up to $500

Financial support in categories e., f., and g. will match, on a 1:1 basis, funds from other university or grant sources (i.e., at least one-half of support must first be committed from department, college, grant, etc.), with approval of that commitment indicated by an authorizing signature at the bottom of the application form. Categories e., f., and g. are given less priority than categories a-d above:

e. Travel to attend research-related workshops or courses to learn specific research skills. Up to $300 domestic or up to $500 international (Canada is considered at the domestic rate.)
f. Travel to present research results at a conference (abstract required; applicant must be first author / presenter; only one award will be funded per paper/poster) Up to $300 domestic or up to $500 international (Canada is considered at the domestic rate.)
g. Travel to attend an EPSCoR-endorsed conference as announced by the ND-EPSCoR Office. up to $300 (The matching funds from other university sources cannot be from federal funds.)

Applications for travel funding must be submitted with the application form designated for Faculty Travel Awards (click on the link below). The following pieces of information must be attached to the form:

* travel dates and destination,
* names of specific people who will be visited, when applicable, and their titles,
* any evidence or documentation to lend credibility or support to your request,
* an abstract or summary of the research project or paper if you will be presenting research (category F),
* proof of acceptance must be shown when presenting a paper/thesis (category F) - this information can be attached in the form of an email, letter or printed web site showing the author's name listed.
