Dr. Philip S. Magee Jr., one of the founding members
and the first chair of the
Society (1990-1995) died on June 27
after a brief battle with cancer.
Phil received his BS in chemistry from the University of Southern California
in 1952. Three years later, he obtained a Ph.D. in physical chemistry at the University of California, Los Angeles.
He worked as a research chemist at Standard Oil, Chevron Ortho Division. He held numerous
patents for phosphorus and sulfur insecticides and herbicides, of which
acephate (Orthene, 1971) and methamidophos (Monitor, 1973) were marketed. He
held adjunct professorships at Oregon State University College of Pharmacy and the University of California, San Francisco, Medical School.
In 1983 he formed BioSAR Consulting, a research and educational consulting firm.
Most of his published structure-activity research is devoted to the analyses
of interactions of chemicals with human skin.
Phil enjoyed several hobbies through his life, including weight lifting, fishing, camping, and motorcycling. He held black belts in two systems of jujitsu. He is survived by his wife, three children, 13 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
