Aug. 20, 2008: Came back to NDSU from Japan
Dr. Kim came back to NDSU after spending his 3 months at Ibaraki University, Hitachi, Ibaraki, Japan.
The research travel was supported by Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) and the host
researcher was Professor Zhishen Wu. Dr. Kim conducted research on the long-term behavior of carbon
fiber reinforced polymer composites for strengthening reinforced concrete members in flexure. (picture)

Dr. Kim presented his on-going research in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering
at Dongguk University, Seoul, Korea. The presentation was invited by Professor Sungchul Lee.

Dr. Kim chaired a session called Repair and Strengthening at the 4th International Conference on
Bridge Maintenance, Safety, and Management (IABMAS08) held in Seoul, Korea. Co-chair of the
session was Professor Jongsung Sim at Hanyang University, Korea.

July 3, 2008: Invited presentation at Saitama University, Japan
Dr. Kim presented his recent research results at Saitama University in Saitama Prefecture, Japan. The
presented research topic included the application of prestressed carbon fiber reinforced polymer sheet for
infrastructure rehabilitation. The presentation was invited by Professor Hiroshi Mutsyoshi. (picture)
Mar. 8, 2008: The Steel Bridge Competition (Regional)
Dr. Kim attended the steel bridge competition that was held at the University of Iowa, Iowa City, IA, with his
colleague Dr. Gajan and ASCE steel bridge team students. A total of 9 student teams were in the competition
representing the mid-west region of the US. NDSU won the first place in the competition and the team will be
going to the national competition to be held in Florida. The NDSU steel bridge team has won four first places
in the national competition thus far. (picture)
Jan. 23, 2008: The TCU Collaborate Grant
Dr. Kim's proposal for the Tri-College University Collaborate Grant was selected for funding by the Tri-College
University. The grant of $1,000 will be used to identify the sources of bridge deterioration in the Fargo/Moorhead
region. Co-PI's are Dr. Yoon (Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Emergency Management at NDSU)
and Dr. Sando (Department of Anthopology and Earth Science at MSUM).
Jan. 16, 2008: The Instructional Development Grant
Dr. Kim's proposal for The Instructional Development Grant was selected for funding by the Office of the Provost.
The grant of $4,500 will be used to initiate a laboratory of CE 404: Reinforced Concrete.
Dec. 19, 2007: JSPS Fellow
Dr. Kim was appointed to be a JSPS Fellow by the Japanese Society for the Promotion of Science.
By accepting the fellowship, Dr. Kim will conduct his research in Japan for three months in 2008.
JSPS was founded in 1932 as a non-profit organization and the objectives of the prestigious fellowship are to foster
young researchers and to promote international scientific cooperation. The host is Professor Zhishen Wu at Ibaraki
University. Professor Wu is an internationally renowned researcher in the area of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP)
composites for construction.
Sept. 27, 2007: Bridge Rehabilitation Seminar Sponsored by ASCE
Dr. Kim attended a seminar, Minneapolis, MN, sponsored by American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).
The topic of the seminar included bridge rehabilitation.
Sept. 12, 2007: Civil Engineering Seminar at NDSU
Dr. Kim delivered a technical presentation on the bridge collapse in Minneapolis, MN (Aug. 1, 2007).
The I-35W bridge (#9340) was constructed in 1967 and had 8 traffic lanes with a total length of 1907 ft. (581 m).
The possible contributions to the bridge collapse were discussed. An effective structural repair method
using fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites was proposed to better rehabilitate deteriorated transportation
structures (abstract)
