Technician Association (NDVTA)

Our Mission

North Dakota Veterinary Technician Association's mission is to represent and promote veterinary technology in North Dakota. NDVTA will provide support and education to its members for professional, competent, and humane care and treatment of large and small animals.

The goals of the North Dakota Veterinary Technician Association are:

  1. Offer the best continuing education seminar possible annually
  2. Promote National Veterinary Technician Week annually (3rd week in October)
  3. Implement a Veterinary Technician Practice Act into North Dakota Law which will also include continuing education
  4. Obtain more members and more participation by its members
  5. Obtain a position for a veterinary technician on the North Dakota Veterinary Medical Examining Board


Benefits of Membership

The benefits of being a North Dakota Veterinary Technician Association member are:
  1. NDVTA ensures quality continuing education for veterinary technicians. The registration fee to our annual continuing education seminar offers a discount to NDVTA members.
  2. NDVTA helps promote and maintain the professional image of veterinary technicians to veterinarians and the public.
  3. NDVTA is a means for veterinary technicians to learn new ideas and techniques from fellow veterinary technicians.
  4. NDVTA provides a network of communication to keep abreast events that affect veterinary technicians (i.e. state representative to North Dakota Americal Veterinary Technician Association.)
  5. NDVTA provides a united voice to help support (or defeat) events that affect the field of veterinary technology positively (or negatively.)
  6. To its members, NDVTA provides a quarterly newsletter which, among various information, lists current job openings.


Technical Duties & Responsibilities

The Veterinary Technician's main functions are to be client educators, laboratory researchers, nurses, and a professional assistant to the Veterinarian. Examples of the responsibilities veterinary technicians assume include:

Clinical Laboratory
- specimen collection and preparation
- specialized microscopic evaluations
- nutritional management
- physical therapy

Radiology
- patient preparation
- radiation calculations and exposure
- radiation safety
- double contrast studies
- film developing

Anesthesiology
- pre-anesthetic evaluation
- administration of local and/or general anesthetic agents
- ECG, blood pressure, and respiratory monitoring
- patient recovery

Surgical Assisting
- assisting during surgical procedures
- surgical suite preparation and maintenance
- instrument/equipment sterilization
- post-operative patient care

Dental Prophylaxis
- cleaning and polishing of dental surfaces
- dental chart and file preparation
- after-care consulting
- oral cavity evaluation

Caring for the Sick
- medication administration
- specialized intensive nursing care
- IV catheterization
- physical therapy
- nutritional management

Outpatient Service
- history taking
- client education
- physical examination
- record preparation

Office/Hospital Management
- medical supplies inventory control
- bookkeeping and practice management
- supervision and training


Veterinary Technician Oath
