** Dr. Stalker’s experience with international students learning to write in English will help all faculty on campus work with all students, especially the growing number of international students at NDSU. When he retired at the end of 2007, Dr. Stalker had become renowned as one of the leading authorities in the world in applied linguistics and TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) and in particular on the effect of students’ native culture on their learning of English as a foreign language. His most recent research has focused on students whose first language is Turkish, but his earlier research includes students from Malaysia, Japan, China, and many other countries and languages. His book Problems of Standardization and Linguistic Variation in Present-Day English remains a standard in the field, and his articles commonly appear in such journals as Applied Linguistics, World Englishes, College Composition & Communication, and English Journal.
