NDSU ORGANIC SPINTRONICS

Unique: NDSU is home to a unique spintronics effort whose emphasis is the construction and understanding of all-organic-based spintronic materials and devices.  Check out the links for details…

Objectives: To understand and develop thin film organic-based materials at room temperature with…….
-remnant moment,
-finite spin polarization,
-density of states at the Fermi level,
-ability to form interfacially abrupt multilayers

Benefits: Organic based materials provide four main benefits…

(1) Low Z materials allow for reduced hyperfine and spin-orbit coupling, which allow for long spin coherence lengths.

(2) Organics in general provide a lower difference in free energy between the surface and bulk, leading to more stable and abrupt interfaces.

(3) Organics may act as scaffolding to hold transition metal centers in place, relative to oxides where agglomeration can occur.

(4) Electrochemistry and polaronic states in organic-based materials allow for fine tuning of the state of metallicity from insulating to metallic.
