His research has been focused on prehistoric agricultural systems, their inception and change. He has worked on this theme in Oceania - specifically in the Hawaiian Islands, American Samoa and Micronesia, as well as in eastern North America. He is currently working on an archaeological field school at Fort Seward, Jamestown, ND. Dr. Riley is the author of nearly a hundred articles and three monographs. He is past Chair of the Board of Directors of the Human Relations Area Files at Yale University, and he serves on a number of professional and community boards.
