We report that the Australian
heteropterist Gordon Gross has sadly passed away. Gordon was one of
the most eminent heteropterists ever to work on Australian true bugs.
He spent most of his working life as an entomologist at the South Australian
Museum in Adelaide. He produced substantial works on many true bug
families, including the Dipsocoridae, Anthocoridae, Miridae, Berytidae,
Rhopalidae, Lygaeidae, Rhyparochromidae, Scutelleridae, Aphylidae,
Tessaratomidae and Pentatomidae. He will be best remembered for his
two volume set on the Pentatomoidea of South Australia, where he produced a
work that was ground breaking in its use of genitalia and positing a higher
classification to the shield bugs. Pentatomid workers the world over
use these works extensively. His works were always beautifully
illustrated. He also produced substantive monographs on pentatomid
taxa, including those on Poecilometis, and the Cephaloplatus
and Rhynchocoris genus-groups. Gordon also collaborated closely
with Jose Carvalho, producing some of the first works on Australian mirids.
More recently he co-wrote the Zoological Catalogue of Australia volumes on
the Heteroptera.Gordon
worked hard and succeeded in unraveling many complexities of Australian land
bugs. He was an avid collector and he had a mind like a steel trap.
He was a linguist and liked nothing better than banter with a colleague
about the etymology of a name. He was a man with a strong presence and
was always generous. He helped many colleagues in furthering their
careers and research objectives. He loved the South Australian Museum
and gave it his all. His works will endure long into the future and he
will be remembered by heteropterists the world over.

Dr I.M. Kerzhner, the great Russian heteropterist passed away on May 29th, 2008. Across the world this sad news deeply touched the entire heteropterist's community, as message upon message from his colleagues expressed their
heartfelt loss and immense gratitude.
It is rare that a man can be measured equally for the quality of his work and personal character. His work was unparalleled in terms of its breadth and
depth, and will endure and be admired for generations. This keeper of true bugs gave freely and tirelessly to all. What is remarkable, that to a person,
he was regarded as a close friend, even those who knew him little. He will be greatly missed.
Sir Richard Southwood: Born June 20, 1931; died October 26, 2005. British heteropterist, ecologist, and former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Oxford, best known for his early work on Heteroptera and the co-authored book "Land and Water Bugs of the British Isles," and later for his ecological and environmental focus. Dr. Nils Møller Andersen: Born November 21, 1940; died May 12, 2004 Danish heteropterist, Zoological Museum, University of Copenhagen, well known for his research on Gerridae and other Gerromorpha, and his benchmark book, "The Semiaquatic Bugs." Richard C. Froeschner: Born March 8, 1916; died May 2, 2002. American heteropterist, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C., best known for his work on the systematics of Cydnidae, Tingidae, and important catalogs. See "Past Workers" under "Photo Gallery" for photograph and citation of obituary.

Vasiliy Georgievich Putshkov: Born November 8, 1909; died December 25, 1995. Russian heteropterist, Institute of Zoology, Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, best known for his Fauna Ukrainy studies, monographs on the Pentatomoidea and Rhopalidae, and book on injurious mirids and a world catalog of the Reduviidae (with P.V.
