IHS BIBLIOGRAPHY

The Society welcomes bibliographies (personal and otherwise) from members. Databased formats are especially desirable, but we would welcome word processing lists as well. No hard copies, all submissions should be on disk, or by Email attachments. Full credit will be given to comprehensive contributions from published or personal sources.

Please separate information into fields in a database or spreadsheet table format, or use tabs to separate items in a word processing document and use upper and lower case as shown in the examples below. Use square brackets around an annotation. This is to facilitate incorporation into our database, maintain a standard format, and to allow searching by categories.

ABOUT THE BIBLIOGRAPHY

The bibliography is intended to aid heteropterists in finding literature relevant to their interests in the true bugs. Because the references in the bibliography were assembled from a variety of sources, they are not entirely consistent in format and most of them are not currently provided with key words or other annotations. Furthermore, because of the methods used to acquire the references, the rendering of diacritics is not always uniform. Nonetheless, the format for rendering the names of authors is reasonably consistent across the database and there is a minimum of duplication of entries. As of September 15, 2001 the bibliography contains titles to just over 31,000 papers by more than 12,000 authors.

The degree to which the bibliography samples the heteropteran literature is biased toward the ease with which the included entries could be acquired. All references listed as of September 15, 2001 were acquired from listings that already existed in electronic form. Each reference is provided with a field labeled "source" indicating the origin of the reference. The contents of the keywords field are in most cases now derived from the source. For example, all references acquire from the "Plant Bugs of the World" (Schuh, 1995 catalog of Miridae) contain the keywords "Miridae taxonomy." In some cases, of course, such keywords may not be entirely accurate. Published included sources are as follows:

Schuh, R. T. 1995. Plant Bugs of the World. New York Entomological Society.

Future efforts to improve the bibliography will be achieved in three main ways: 1) by gathering additional references through scanning and optical character recognition; 2) receiving additional references through submissions in electronic form by the members of the society or through direct entry on the Society website; and 3) correcting existing entries and adding keywords with the assistance of the membership.

For assistance with the current version of the bibliography, I would like to thank the following individuals who have generously provided files that they have compiled: Nils Andersen, Berend Aukema, Thomas J. Henry, Jane E. O'Donnell, David A. Rider, James A. Slater, and Alfred G. Wheeler, Jr.
