Minard Hall Addition
North Dakota State University
Minard Hall Addition

The Minard Addition proved to be a project with a difficult program and an even more difficult site, requiring excavation and construction directly against the 101-year-old Minard Hall building. Creating a logically and aesthetically pleasing connection between a prominent campus historic building (Minard Hall) and the modern style of the Music Education building challenged the design team of Michael J. Burns Architects. By incorporating monumental entries and a large commons area, the hope is to create an inviting gateway building for the NDSU campus.

Construction on the Minard Addition was completed in the Fall of 2003.

Building Facts
  • Total Square Footage: 23,000 sq. ft.
  • Total Project Cost: $3.4 million
  • Project Start Date: September 2002
  • Project Completion Date: Summer 2003

Minard Hall Addition Elevation
Structure and Finishes
  • Concrete foundation and slabs on grade with steel superstructure
  • Steel stud walls with entire exterior of detailed brick veneer played off forms and motifs of existing Minard Hall
  • Quartz epoxy flooring throughout, except lecture halls, which feature high-grade carpet for acoustic purposes
  • Interior walls specifically engineered for sound and impact absorption
  • Corridors and other common public places to receive durable, contemporary polymer-bead 'stucco-like' finish

Building Use
The Minard Hall Addition has been designed as "University space", intended for use by any department requiring additional classroom or lecture space on campus. As a link between the Music Education building and Minard Hall, it will also serve as a gathering place for students with the future incorporation of a coffee service area and the inviting second floor mezzanine overlooking the first floor commons area.

First Floor
12,000 sq. ft. that will include:
    • One traditional lecture hall of 2,700 sq. ft. seating over 200 students
    • One PBL (Problem-Based Learning) lecture hall that will be outfitted with cutting edge learning technologies
    • One ancillary classroom space
    • Coffee service area integrated with a 1,500 sq. ft. commons area

Second Floor
1,500 sq. ft. of mezzanine overlooking the commons and first floor corridor areas

Third Floor
7,000 sq. ft. mix - one small, one medium and one large university classroom space; one smaller PBL lecture room

Fourth Floor
2,000 sq. ft. mechanical area (entire floor)

The "Gem"
A beautiful monumental stair connecting the commons to the classrooms above will emphasize the quality and scale of this building.
