The Modern Language Association is the primary professional organization for language and literature scholars and teachers in higher education.

NCTE

The National Council of Teachers of English is another professional organization devoted to teachers of English at all levels.

CCCC (4C's)

The Confernece on College Composition and Communication is the professional organization and annual conference for scholars and teachers in composition and rhetoric.

The Association of Departments of English is another professional organization, similar to the MLA. It publishes a journal on professional concerns and maintains the MLA job search list.

The Chronicle of Higher Education

The Chronicle is a weekly periodical that provides news, book announcements, job announcements, advice and opinion pieces about the profession. It is an invaluable resource for learning what is happening in the profession. The department has a print subscription, if you would like the access code, please contact the Graduate Committee.

The Calls for Paper list and listserv is the most popular disseminator of calls for papers for conferences, journals, and book projects. The website is organized by subject (including graduate student conferences) and searchable. Directions for subscribing to the listserv are also available.

Octopus

Octopus is an interdisciplinary journal published by the graduate students in the Program of Visual Studies at the University of California, Irvine. It is peer-reviewed.
