Scotch Pine

Scotch Pine growing in a group. Scotch Pine grown at the Towner Nursery comes from a seed orchard near the nursery. The orchard represents selected sources of Scotch Pine from Northern Europe and Asia and is often refereed to as Siberian Scotch Pine. This Scotch Pine is very winter-hardy and is suited for planting throughout the Great Plains and Southern Canada. Scotch Pine prefers sandy loam or heavier soils. It can reach a height of six feet in six years with good care. The mature height of Scotch Pine is about 40 feet and is planted in windbreaks eight to twelve feet apart. Scotch Pine is available as bare root or container grown stock and sold in lots of fifty (50).
Seven varieties of Scotch Pine were evaluated for possible Christmas tree production in a six-year study in North Dakota. The two top rated varieties were Austrian Hills and Riga. They both rated high in survival, resistance to winter injury and percent of marketable trees and response to shearing. Riga is rated higher than Austrian Hills on resistance to winter injury but lower on winter color. Austrian Hills and Riga Scotch Pine are available only as container stock and sold in lots of fifty (50). Container grown seedlings of Scotch Pine in the greenhoues.
