One thing that is not well understood is the wind energy resource. Yes, it is variable, but there are ways to capture the variability in ways that benefit the standalone user, as well as the grid from a utility perspective. I wrote a paper on how the wind can firm itself as an energy resource. What the commerical interests are concerned about is having energy when they need it, just like traditional power plants. Despite the fact that the wind is variable, it can provide a more consistent supply of energy than you think!
This paper was written with the commercial industry in mind, but the same principles apply for small wind for an off-grid user. In fact, it was a result of what I've researched with small wind in my off-grid home that has given me the ability to offer this perspective for the commercial users!
