Sample Photo Essays: Print and Online

McLuhan's The Medium is the Massage can be thought of as an extended photo essay. At times, the scale tips in favor of words (towards explicitness), at times, the scale tips towards images (towards abstractness).

The McLuhan Probes take The Medium is the Massage one step further: highly visual presentation of McLuhan's ideas. Instead of infographics, these design students have constructed photo essays or image essays.

David Carson is one of the world's leading graphic designers. He often acknowledges a debt to McLuhan's work, and he has worked on a McLuhan project: The Book of Probes. Ginko press has a gallery of his work--not exactly a photo essay, but each composition is interesting. Remember Todd Gitlin's line in chapter two: we want our fonts clean and our photos blurry?

Douglas Coupland's books, Souvenir of Canada and City of Glass are interesting photo essays. Coupland's website has some of his designs.

This link will take you to Barry Mauer's essay "The Found Photograph and the Limits of Meaning." You will find within the essay links to more photos.

Elizabeth Cohen's "Double Exposure" is an inspiration for this assigment: a photo essay about visual culture.

Krieger, Herman. "Photo Essays by Herman Krieger." . http://www.efn.org/~hkrieger/. Accessed Aug. 28, 2004.
Easy to navigate, easy to load, eclectic and interesting photo essays by Herman Krieger.

Modern Ruins: Photographic Essays
Great collection of photo essays by Shaun O'Boyle that start with an introductory paragraph and then let the photos speak for themselves.
