Read Peck, Flower, and Higgins"Community Literacy" (Literacy 572ff).  We will use their description of the Pittsburgh Community Literacy Center and its projects as a starting point for our project. We will brainstorm possibilities for NDSU's role in community literacy.

Read Szwed, "The Ethnography of Literacy" in Literacy, 421ff. Feasibility study overview. Update the group on the status of your interview subjects.

Discuss CLI project options within your group. Do any relevant research. Begin drafting a survey to be given to NDSU liberal arts and english education undergraduates.

Some of the essays that were originally scheduled for this day may be relevant to your project; someone in the group could be responsible for reading one or more of these pieces.

Decide on a CLI project--groups will report to each other on their decisions.

Identify information needed to complete a draft of the background section of the feasibility report.

Identify and work on other tasks relevant to the project: survey, web-research, further research on writing feasibility reports, etc.

Additional research on community literacy (web or print based) should be conducted and shared with the class as a whole.

I will try to arrange appropriate visitors based on areas of group interest. This should function as a "group interview" and material should be relevant for your feasibility study.

Oral Presentations of feasibility studies delivered (10-15 minutes each); feasibility study due.

5/12 Mon Final Exam: 8:00 am - 9:30 a.m. (change in schedule). In class essay: a) reflect on similarities and differences in print and visual communication (25 pts) (a carry over from Academic essay unit) communication; b) feedback on what you learned, what remains fuzzy, and a revised course syllabus for next year (50 pts).
