Community Literacy Links

Proliteracy.org
Proliteracy International is the world's largest adult literacy organization. Proliteracy supports various adult literacy programs in all 50 States and around the world. Only the Minot Adult Literacy center is listed for North Dakota—we should encourage the Fargo Adulty Literacy centered to get connected, and perhaps find other centers around the State.

The East Texas Literacy Council
This website might serve as a model for a Community Literacy Center or Community Literacy Coalition in Fargo Moorhead or the Red River Valley. It provides information about adult literacy in general, issues specific to Texas, and information for its students.

Literacy Partners of Manitoba
This website brings together a variety of links and resources related to adult and family literacy in the great province of Manitoba. As you work on this project, consider a "virtual literacy center" along these lines as one of the possibile recommendations. Also note the events the group has sponsored: family literacy day, for example. Maybe a Fargo Literacy co-alition can start with a few simple events. You might also want to check out some testimonials--similar to the literacy interviews and essays I am asking you to do.

The Saskatchewan Literacy Network
I don't mean to be nationalistic, but Manitoba and Saskatchewan really have their acts together. This web site has a wealth of information as well as a very professional look and feel.

I posted a blog entry about two community literacy centers with strong ties to universities. They are both potential models.

NEW (April 22, 2003)

If you want to look at what undergraduate students have done to start and sustain literacy initiatives, take a look at the Student Coalition for Action in Literacy Education (SCALE) website. Inspiring! Be sure to look at their resources--lots of material that could be used in your feasibility report.

One of SCALE's partners is AOL-Time Warner; the corporate giant supports a program called "Time to Read" (clever, eh?). If any group still feels a bit lost, I would recommend looking at what it takes to set up a "Time to Read" program--by following their 12 steps, you could literally decide whether this program is feasible or not for NDSU.

North Dakota Links

I'm going to let you decide what to make of these site, and how you want to use them in your feasbility study.
