Course Description

This course is an introduction to various theories and concepts central to the teaching of composition specifically and writing generally. You will have a chance to explore topics of personal interest after we have covered terms, issues, and figures central to understanding composition theory.

Assignments

Inksheds. Each week, write at least 500 word responses to the readings. You may focus on one reading, compare two, or identify an issue that runs through many. Bring copies of your Inksheds for the other members of the class–we will use them as starting points for discussion.

Collaborative project. I would like to negotiate with you an appropriate collaborative project. I am looking for the kind of project that would help you develop a clear view of the discipline and a firm understanding of crucial concepts. A handbook for TA training ("Introduction to Comp Theory"), a web site, or simply a collaborative paper are some of the possibilities.

Conference paper. Your paper for this course should be written with conference presentation in mind: 10-12 pages; a clearly identified topic and argument supported by engaging material.
