English 320: Practical WritingLast Taught: Spring 2001 Texts Anderson, Paul V. Technical Writing: A Reader-centered Approach. 4th Edition. Orlando:Harcourt Brace, 1998. Course Description and Objectives This course is designed to give you practice in written communication, oral communication, design production, and design evaluation. Practical writing requires you to respond to a variety of specific audiences and to express yourself successfully in written, visual, and oral communication. English 320 treats the theories, principles, and processes of effective communication in the professional world. The course will help you: understand and apply rhetorical principles to professional communication understand the generic requirements of important forms of professional communication understand and implement principles of effective document design understand the influences of and the constraints imposed by organizational settings in the composition of professional documents. In addition to these communication skills, this course will also introduce you to, or extend your knowledge of, various computer applications and skills. We will discuss the changing nature of work in the coming century, and speculate on the place of communication in future work environments. You will also have the opportunity to explore and evaluate important concepts like Total Quality Management and collaboration, or investigate changes in information technology relevant to your future profession. |
