DALE E. HERMAN

  PROFESSOR OF HORTICULTURE

Dr. Dale Herman grew up on a farm at Brinsmade, ND and graduated from Leeds High School in 1956. He received his B.S. degree from North Dakota State University in 1960; his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Purdue University in 1963 and 1966, respectively. He served on the faculty of horticulture at South Dakota State University from 1966-1971.

He has been a faculty member at North Dakota State University since 1971. He is a professor with the Dept. of Plant Sciences and currently teaches five horticulture classes. His research projects include Hardy Landscape Plants for the Northern Plains and Species-Site Adaptation Study of Woody Plants for North Dakota. Dr. Herman has been directly involved with the introduction of 19 woody plants at NDSU.

He recently served two terms (6 years) as a member of the International Peace Garden Board of Directors. He has served continuously since the early 1970's on the International Peace Garden Planning Committee (secretary and chairman). He serves on the North Dakota Community Forestry Advisory Council, Fargo Forestry Advisory Committee and department/university committees. Recent honors include the 1995 Centennial "Forest Resources Educator of the Year" Award from the ND Centennial Trees Commission , Mortar Board Outstanding Academic Advisor , and recipient of an Honorary FFA State Degree. He has written numerous publications, and most recently served as an author for "The North Dakota Tree Handbook". In 1996 he was recognized for a "Quarter Century of Service" to North Dakota State University and received a Commendation for Excellence in Teaching - Senior Career.
