2. ITS Update
a) This announcement will come out in It’s Happening this week: ITS is establishing a regular weekly schedule for doing server and network maintenance. We hope to limit the need for emergency outages by scheduling planned periods for regular maintenance. This schedule should minimize the impact on educational and business activities while ensuring stable mission-critical systems. Regular weekly maintenance times are scheduled for Thursdays, 5 to 7 a.m. and Sundays, 8 a.m. to noon. Not all services will be affected during these periods. Services that are affected will be posted on the ITS Web page one business day prior to the maintenance period. Anyone interested in receiving e-mail notifications can subscribe to one or more notification lists. These will provide information on specific services as well as an option to receive notification on all services. For more information, see www.ndsu.edu/its. If you have questions or concerns about any planned maintenance, please contact Mary Twitchell at 231-6108 or the ITS Help Desk at 231-8685. One side-note regarding the "announcements" of maintenance: ITS is still publishing the particulars relating to each discrete task involved in scheduled maintenance. If you receive the announcements now via a listserv email list , you will continue to receive them, and ITS will continue to publish the announcements on the ITS Web site.
b) The following announcement will come out in It’s Happening this week: Information Technology Services will be replacing a number of three-year-old computers in the ITS-supported computer clusters this summer. Campus departments may purchase the old cluster computers to use for upgrading faculty and staff machines. This year the goal is to reduce support costs by replacing old departmental computers and to provide adequate computers to people who will need to use ConnectND extensively. The purchase of a cluster computer will require the trade in of a computer that is currently being used. For more information on how to request a used cluster computer, see http://its.ndsu.nodak.edu/cascade. We will accept requests through June 1st. If you have questions, contact Jim Sellner at 231-6231 or at jim.sellner@ndsu.nodak.edu.
c) ITS is creating a list of department liaisons to improve communication. They also intend to convene a formal group of campus IT professionals; this group would have regular meetings to discuss IT issues.
d) Videoconferencing guidelines. Rosi Kloberdanz presented three documents related to Videoconferencing at NDSU (1. Videoconferencing recommedations for the Provost; 2. Videoconferencing departmental policy; and 3. Videoconferencing departmental installation guidelines). These documents are the result of many, many drafts of a document that originated with a committee appointed by the Provost and chaired by Jim Ross, which then went to an "Implementation Committee" charged to take the original document and pare it down to an implementation plan. This, in turn, has been whittled down over many months to 3 short policies/guidelines, along with a recommendation to the Provost regarding a plan for managing video on campus. CITPG discussed the documents and provided feedback. R. Kloberdanz will incorporate the suggestions into the next draft. The documents suggest that a committee be formed to monitor and direct the continued development of videoconferencing on campus. D. Wittrock indicated that CITPG would like to be involved in the work of this committee.
e) Novell file, print and GroupWise implementation: ITS is putting together a FAQ on Novell quotas. It is still a work in progress. Client Services Director, Rosi Kloberdanz, attended today's meeting and led a discussion on the Novell file, print and GroupWise implementation.
