1. Minutes
- The minutes for the August 25
meeting of CITPG were approved.
2. ITS
Update
3. Printing
from Blackboard
Nem Schlecht stated that the library has had difficulties because students are printing large files from Blackboard. Faculty members are putting up large, graphically intensive PowerPoint and Word documents in their Blackboard space, which then students download and print. These types of documents tend to be rather large, and thus, take a significant amount of time to print. The library has had lines of students at their printers waiting for output. Currently, the library’s print server is able to handle the load, but they are worried that the problem will continue to increase. The CITPG members felt that user education (i.e. the faculty) may be useful in this case; Jim Ross will communicate the issue to ITS staff.
4. Classroom
Computer Login
Joe Latimer related the following story. “A professor today pointed out a problem with having to log onto the classroom presentation computers. In this case it appeared that either the authentication server or the network to the server was down and the professor could not log into the classroom computer. The result was that the professor could not use PowerPoint or any other local application in the class. If we multiply this professor's problem times the number of instrumented classroom this can result in a significant problem and potential loss of productivity. I had a similar problem when I forgot to log off of one of the classroom computers as I rushed to the next class and the authentication system will not allow a user to be logged on more than once. In this case I had a student log onto the computer but it helps to emphasize the potential problem.” Joe asked whether classroom machines could be configured to come up in a standalone mode when this type of problem occurs. Paul Juell stated that he had heard a number of complaints about the login procedure and Holly Bastow-Shoop also indicated that she had problems with the login. Several committee members stressed the importance of having classroom technology available for lecture. It was also mentioned that the time between classes is often rushed and chaotic, so the system needs to be user friendly. Because most classrooms lack a telephone calling the Help Desk is not an option. Jim Ross will communicate the problem to ITS and ITS and CITPG will work together to identify and implement a solution.
5. Desktop
Standards Taskforce Report
The Desktop Standards Taskforce is developing a procedure to
inventory campus computers. The
discussion indicated that the main concern is to identify currently used hardware
and operating systems. The Taskforce
was asked to develop and report on an implementation procedure and rationale
for the inventory. Joe Latimer
mentioned that the College of Business Administration is considering a system
to inventory college computers. The
software they are considering is described at: http://ocsinventory.sourceforge.net/index.php.
Meeting adjourned at 3:10 p.m.
