We had a lengthy discussion on bandwidth and P2P applications, particularly an increasingly common practice in which students load P2P applications on cluster computers. Last spring we decided that it was necessary to allow students to load software onto cluster computers, so this problem cannot be resolved at the present time by restricting these privileges. Our conclusion was to increase the implementation of current policies that bar the use of personal applications that interfere with the essential functions of IT. Students will be instructed regarding the policy and will be informed that applications that over-utilize resources are prohibited, these applications include P2P applications like Kazaa and Morpheus. Violation of this policy will be enforced first with a warning and then with a restriction of IT privileges.
Meeting adjourned at 2:56 p.m.
