  1. Minutes - The minutes for the August 26 meetings of CITPG were approved

  1. ITS Update
    1. Jim Ross announced:
      1. Scott Mahar reports that the CITPG scenarios created to test the ERP system have been valuable in the development of the ERP system.  Updates on the ERP roll out can be found at: http://www.nodak.edu/connectnd/.
      2. PRS has been installed across campus, and the early reports from faculty and students are that the systems work well and being used often.
    2. John Grosen announced:
      1. LAN bandwidth.  Bandwidth usage is being constantly monitored and NDSU is exceeding its HECN Internet bandwidth allocation.  The increase appears to be coming primarily from the residence halls.  In the past ITS has blocked and limited certain applications by users in the residence halls.  They have developed a new model in which each student has an assigned quota of bandwidth per day.  If the per day limit is reached they put into a rate limited pool which they share with other individuals who have reached their daily limit.  ITS is meeting with Residence Life to discuss lowering the limits to reduce campus bandwidth consumption.
      2. Networking equipment was purchased over the summer and is currently being installed.  The first subnet was converted last week.  The goal is to have the entire campus converted by the end of October.  Because of the work involved in the conversion and the extraordinary amount of building and remodeling projects this past summer, new work orders are taking up to 45 days to complete.
      3. ITS is seeing a marked increase in information security issues. It has formed a new work group, Risk Management, which is led by Marty Hoag and includes the NDUS IT Security Officer, Dick Jacobson, and a vacant position for an NDSU IT Security officer. The group will focus on Business Continuity Planning and Information Security. This past summer there were several security issues related to the Apache web server and PHP (a web programming language) which affected many of ITS' servers including the campus web server. In general, security incidences are consuming a growing amount of staff time which is taking away from our other services.
      4. Desktop Standards.  The desktop group is developing a detailed draft.  Work on a goals statement has not begun as of yet.  AgComm is also developing standards for the College of Agriculture in parallel with the ITS standards.
      5. Help Desk.  ITS is working on a University System help desk service.  It began action at the beginning of the fall (2002) semester.  One of its purposes is to support distance learning.
    3. Rosi Kloberdanz announced that the IT Plan was submitted in July, no feedback has been provided to date.  CITPG will be asked to help in the implementation of the plan.
