History and Purpose of COBRE Core Biology Facility The Core Biology Facility was established in January 2003 with funding from the Center for Protease Research. Its original and current purpose was to researchers attached to the Center with all biological testing. In the past year the Core Facility has been branching out to assist other researchers at NDSU and the rest of North Dakota and Western Minnesota. The Center for Protease Research (CPR) was established in February 2001 with a $8.25 million research grant awarded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) - National Center for Research Resources (NCRR). The goal of this five year grant was to establish a Center for Biomedical Research Excellence using a mulit disciplinary approach that include the departments of Pharmaceutical Science and Chemistry & Molecular Biology. The research aim for the center is to study a class of enzymes called matrix metalloproteinases (MMP's), whose overabundance in the body has been linked to arthritis, diabetes and cancer.
