October 4, 2005 Minutes

We had three wonderful speakers from each of the three colleges.  They each spoke about resume Dos and Don'ts and gave us a lot of information to work with.

Sonja Rue, from MSUM, gave a general introducation about what's important on a resume:
- work and intern experience is very important
- include a summary of qualificiations
- all accomplishments and achievements should be included to show that you can be successful while being involved in other groups and activities
- make sure to use a clear objective
- GPA's are more important to certian professions that others

Penny Aipperspach, from NDSU, also had lots of helpful information:
- your resume should have solid content and not be redundant
- it should be formatted to fit on one page instead of two
- suggested having two resumes instead of one; one normal resume to print and send/fax and one online resume that is simple and can be emailed without problems arising
- she also gave us a great handout that talks about RESUME GUIDELINES and it can be found at www.ndsu.edu/career_center

Barbara Aarestad, from Concorida, wrapped up the evening by adding information about online job searching.
- you can search for many jobs online and even post your resume for others to view
- online resumes should be typed in common fonts ilke Aerial, Courier or Times New Roman
- she suggested sending an online resume to yourself so that you can see what it will look like to the employer
- future employers look at your resume as a writing sample and it should be well written and organized
- cover letters should always be included to help emphasize what you're looking for
- cover letters should have complete sentences, proper punctuation and grammer (avoid slang)
- cater to the desired employer and have different resumes for different occupations
- think proporionately

We concluded the evening with a short resume workshop.  Students had their resumes critiqued by the three presenters and had their questions answered on a one-on-one basis.

Many new members turned in their dues and the year is off to a great start!
