Dr. Smith joined the faculty of NDSU in July 2000 as Director for Construction Management and Engineering after three years at Iowa State University in the Department of Civil and Construction Engineering. Prior to ISU he was on the Civil Engineering faculty at Penn State University for eleven years.

Dr. Smith has taught a wide diversity of courses including, contracts and specifications, scheduling, cost estimating, temporary structures and facilities, land development design, quality management and control, project management, soils, foundation and mechanical/electrical systems.

His research interests include:

Quality control and systems applications related to construction materials and specifications, decision analysis and modeling techniques, safety performance measurement and improvements, process and productivity improvement
