College of Engineering and Architecture
Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering & Applied Mechanics

      Program Description
The Department of Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics offers graduate programs leading to the Master of Science degree. Graduate work may be concentrated in engineering mechanics, biomechanics, thermal engineering, automatic controls, engineering materials with an emphasis on composite materials, and engineering design with plastics. Students with a B.S. degree in physics or mathematics may pursue a special graduate program of studies and earn an M.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering.
    Degree Requirements
The Master of Science in mechanical engineering and applied mechanics degree requires a minimum of 30 semester credits beyond the B.S. degree. There are two options within the M.S. degree; a thesis option and a comprehensive study option. For the thesis option, a student must complete a core curriculum of 12 credits of graduate courses in mechanical engineering; a master's thesis of at least 6 credits; and a minimum of 12 credits of approved technical electives. With the comprehensive study option, a student must complete a core curriculum of 15 credits of graduate courses in mechanical engineering, a master's paper of at least 3 credits, and a minimum of 12 credits of approved technical electives. All students must pass a final oral examination covering both course work and the thesis or paper and maintain an overall GPA of 3.0.
