CCAMPIS assists students with child care costs.

North Dakota State University's (NDSU) Office of TRIO Programs is offering assistance to student parents through Child Care Access Means Parents in School (CCAMPIS), a four-year grant program through the U.S Department of Education.

CCAMPIS assists income-eligible student parents with child care expenses. CCAMPIS works with local accredited and licensed child care facilities.

Family dynamics

Children participating in high quality child care programs are impacted in three areas: academically, socially/emotionally, and with regards to children’s health.

Academically, children attending high quality child care are better prepared to adjust to kindergarten, demonstrate greater skills on cognitive ability assessments, and are more likely to graduate and pursue post-secondary education or training.

Socially/emotionally, children tend to demonstrate greater motivation for learning and commitment to school. In addition ,they demonstrate greater socialization skills, are friendlier, more considerate and task oriented.

Recipients of child care programs have more access to health care and dental care and demonstrate a higher level of nutritional practices.

Child Care Goals

High quality child care and education facilities generally have four common curriculum goals.

One goal, social in nature, endeavors to help children feel comfortable in school, make friends, and feel an important part of a group.

Emotionally, the goal is to help children experience pride and self confidence, developing independence and self-control, and having a positive attitude on life.

The third goal is cognitive development, empowering children to become competent learners, acquiring problem-solving and language skills.

Physical growth is the final goal, utilizing activities that allow children to comfortably increase their muscle skills.

Qualifying for assistance

When a student applies to CCAMPIS each semester, their application will be reviewed by the project director to determine eligibility and acceptance.

The project director interviews prospective students who qualify with a Pell grant and a licensed and accredited child care facility. Selection will be based first on the student’s Pell grant award, and then on any special circumstances of the student. CCAMPIS will cover between 70 percent and 90 percent of child care expenses.
