Executive Summary of Written Consulting Proposal Case

Audience
Your audience is Mary Adams, your client, her board of directors, and her accountant, Jessie Smith. Mary is very busy and needs a careful summary of your proposal and recommendations. This document is called an executive summary, and is a page long and is included with the proposal.

Purpose
To summarize the proposal for a busy executive.

Assignment
Write a carefully designed, one-page summary of your proposal.

Planning and Drafting:

  • Begin after your proposal is complete.
  • Summarize the strong arguments that run through your proposal. Remember, your proposal is arguing that you are suited to solve Mary's problem. You are not solving the problem, just showing her you know enough to do it.
  • Be sure that this document is particularly interesting, well-designed, and carefully written. It is often the one document your client will read carefully.

Criteria: The summary:

  • Effectively summarizes central argument of proposal.
  • Forecasts the organizational strategy of your proposal.
  • Uses appropriate visual cues to chunk information, but does not ignore verbal transitions.
  • Employs a consistent upbeat business tone—professional, but not academic.
  • Shows careful proofing and attention to correctness.
