Assignment #1: Multi-vocal Book Review

Assignment: For this assignment, we will write a collaborative, multi-vocal book review of Day and Eodice’s book (First Person)2. We will either attempt to publish this in an electronic format: an on-line electronic journal, self-publish in a blog, etc.

Goals: There are several learning goals for this project:

  • plan and carry out a cooperative project
  • read and respond to an important new text in our discipline
  • synthesize info: our understandings of multi-vocality, disciplinary practices of book reviews, knowledge of a single text in the context
  • research and better understand electronic publication
  • develop a project for electronic publication

Planning: Here’s some very basic planning, but we’ll need to add to it as a class:

  1. Read Day and Eodice’s book.
  2. Discuss book in GDC
  3. Decide on form and content of review in GDC
  4. Assign reading/writing/etc. and develop schedule over next two weeks.

Products: Here are the things you will produce as the result of this assignment:

  • a multi-vocal book review in an electronic format (group)
  • a memo self-assessment of your work and group interaction (individual)

Grading Criteria: Here are the criteria upon which I will ask you to assess yourselves:

  • offered input into planning the project
  • prepared for project by completing assigned reading, researching appropriate outside materials
  • offered carefully considered feedback on peer writing
  • wrote intelligent, focused prose and response on topics assigned by group
  • wrote the amount of prose assigned or agreed to by the group
  • worked to make this a successful project by being a strong collaborator
