  • extends the argument of a previously published paper
  • includes a descriptive title
  • employs specific, relevant examples from data to elaborate on assertions
  • offers new insight on the topic
  • presents clear synthesis of research question, published scholarship, and data
  • shows understanding of assignment; is appropriate to writing purpose
       

Organization:

  • the overall logic of the essay is clear
  • the organization is appropriate to this genre
  • looks like a research article: single spaced, employs headers and bulleted lists where appropriate
  • transitions between sentences and paragraphs show the reader logical connections among the pieces of evidence employed
  • author attempts to forecast the overall argument of the paper
  • author signposts regularly–reader is not confused by organizational choices
       

Expression:

  • consistent point-of-view (controlled, if any, shifts)
  • avoids passive voice
  • voice and diction are appropriate to the genre, audience, and purpose of the essay
  • sentences vary in length and type
  • word choice is accurate, appropriate, and demonstrates discipline-appropriate jargon
       

Shows adequate attention to:

  • proofing
  • spell checking
  • careful editing
  • citations are correct and consistent
