List of North Dakota tiger beetle species
Higher classification of the species listed here follows Arnett and Thomas (2001) in which tiger beetles are ranked as a subfamily (Cicindelinae) within the ground beetle family Carabidae. Nomenclature at the genus and species levels follows Freitag (1999). The genus Cicindela has been split into several subgenera, and these subgenera are listed in the classification provided here. It should be noted that most North American tiger beetle workers treat Cicindela as a single entity (sensu lato). Twenty-two tiger beetle species are known to occur in North Dakota and all belong to the genus Cicindela Linnaeus. Of these, five species have more than one subspecies known to occur within North Dakota. Eight other species have only one subspecies known to occur in North Dakota, with other subspecies occurring outside the state. The other nine species occurring in North Dakota have no valid subspecies names. The species list presented here is in alphabetical order and does not reflect phylogenetic relationships within the genus.
