Conference History
1962 - 2006
According to E.C. Buehler (Kansas), the original invitation list in 1962 included the Big Eight schools (Colorado, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Kansas, Kansas State, Iowa State, Missouri, and Nebraska) plus the University of Iowa and Colorado State University. The label " Midwest" or "Midwestern" in the conference title was based on a loosely-knit alliance among those schools in 1961-1962. The name of the organization had changed from Directors of the Basic Speech Course of Midwestern Universities to Midwest Basic Course Directors by 1978; the exact date or instigator of the change is not known. In 2003, the group elected to drop “ Midwest” from the title. Now it’s simply the Basic Course Directors’ Conference.
Jon Blubaugh ( Kansas) has accumulated programs from conferences held between 1967 and 1981, and has a copy of the original program from Buehler's 1962 conference at Lawrence. Jon has established a file at the University of Kansas, and will welcome additions to it. It would be appropriate for the conference director(s) each year to send him a copy of that year's program.
