Textbook: Watson RT. 2004. Data Management: Databases and Organizations. 2nd ed. Wiley: New York. 603 p.

 

 

Course Description:  Fundamentals of conceptualizing and implementing databases.  Emphasis is on using query languages to obtain information for decision-making.  Includes managerial topics related to database administration, security, integrity, optimization, and distributed databases.

Pre-requisite: MIS 370, CSci 228.

Course Objectives:  1) to understand the use and management of data in organizations, 2) To develop a practical understanding of the design of relational databases, 3) to develop experience in the use of database manipulation using SQL and other query mechanisms, 4) to apply database design and implementation skills in course projects.

Grading: Grading is based on the 90-80-70% grading system.

Evaluation: The emphasis of the course is practical in nature and evaluation will reflect this emphasis.  Group and individual projects will contribute significantly to evaluation.  However, individual progress will also be evaluated through 3 exams.  Presentations, quizzes, and homework may also be used for evaluation.  A tentative breakdown of evaluation is as follows:
