The Mental Health & Aging Clician Training is available by a grant from the North Dakota Human Services Department to the NDSU Gerontology Program. Our goal of this grant is to provide Clinicians with proper training on the subject of Mental Health & Aging. Contuining Education credits are available through the NDSU Distance Education Office.

Unit One- Overview of Aging and Mental Health
Unit One contains an overview of aging and mental health issues including demographics and a discussion of the impact of mental health disorders on service providers and older adults.
Unit Two- Assessment and Diagnosis
Unit Two addresses common mental health disorders in older adults and presents information about the assessment and diagnosis of mental health issues in older adults.
Unit Three- The Aging Brain
Unit Three explores the normal and abnormal changes that occur in the human brain with aging and highlights the impact these changes can have on mental health.
Unit Four- Psychosocial and Pharmacological Treatment
Unit Four explores psychosocial and pharmacological treatments of mental health issues in older adults. A review of medications commonly used to treat mental health disorders in the elderly, complications arising from pharmacological treatment as well as suggestions for therapeutic interventions are offered.
Unit Five- Wellness and Prevention
Unit five explores the role of exercise and adequate nutrition in maintaining positive mental health status with advancing age.
Unit Six- Resources and Referrals
Unit Six identifies local, state, and national resources for older adults with mental health concerns and examines the process of making effective referrals for older age clients. A printable resource guide is included in this unit.
