Construction Engineering
College of Engineering and Architecture
The construction industry is the largest industry in the country. It accounts for more than $10 billion annually-nearly 14%-of the nation's gross national product. It's an industry which employs nearly 6 million men and women.
The Program
The construction engineering program is a blend of engineering, construction and construction management courses. The program is designed for those who want to work in the construction industry and enjoy the status of a professional engineer. It is somewhat similar to the construction management program, but has more emphasis on engineering and technical courses.
The Mission
The mission of the construction management and engineering (CME) department at North Dakota State University is to provide quality programs for preparing nationally competitive undergraduate and graduate students for a successful career in construction. The programs are designed to provide educational, research and outreach opportunities that serve both the needs of our students and those of the construction industry.
Educational Objectives
- to maintain a sustained program of continuing education and life-long learning with focus on contemporary issues;
- to be productive construction engineers and/or construction managers who are pursing or have attained professional registration;
- to be effective ommunicators who work on multi-disciplinary teams;
- to be engaged engineering professionals who are aware of and comprehend the ethical, social, environmental and economic impacts of engineering solutions;
- to be engaged citizens who become involved and seek leadership roles in professional societies and community organizations.
A Modern, Well-Equipped Facility
Construction engineering is in the eight-building engineering and architecture complex. Well-equipped laboratories are designed for experimentation in each of the areas of construction and engineering studies. Classrooms have ample space, are well-lighted and contain excellent visual aid equipment.
Career Opportunities
Construction engineering graduates are in high demand by contractors in all types of construction, by design-construction firms and by large owners who have continuing construction programs. Positions available include superintendent, project manager, sales person, field engineer, cost engineer, programmer, design engineer, safety engineer and company executive. Graduates will be well qualified in the areas of construction programming, cost control and construction quality control. Management training will provide enumerable opportunities in the construction industry.
Summer Employment
Summer employment in construction is available to NDSU students enrolled in construction engineering. The Associated General Contractors of North Dakota provides summer jobs for construction students when possible. The objective of the summer employment is two-fold: for the student to learn more about construction and to provide a good summer income.
Accreditation
The construction engineering program is accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology.
Scholarship Opportunities
The Associated General Contractors of North Dakota, the Home Builders Care Foundation, a charitable arm of the Home Builders Association of Fargo-Moorhead, and the National Association of Home Builders offer annual scholarships to outstanding freshmen and upperclass students. In addition, Helgason Engineering Scholarships are available to freshmen and transfer students. Contact the department chair or the NDSU Office of Admission for more information and deadlines.
