Welcome to Health, Nutrition, and Exercise Sciences

Graduate Program Home

Welcome, and thank you for your interest in pursuing your graduate education with the Department of Health, Nutrition and Exercise Sciences (HNES) at North Dakota State University. After reading this letter, please take your time and peruse all of the graduate information on this site. If you still have questions or just need additional information, please contact Dr. Brad Strand, Department Head at (701) 231-9718 or Bradford.Strand@ndsu.edu, or our department at (701) 231-7491.

NDSU is located in Fargo, ND, a city with a metropolitan population of 175,000 with excellent medical facilities, great public schools, a wonderful park and recreation system, a plethora of entertainment and cultural opportunities, and a huge regional shopping mall. Our sister city across the Red River, Moorhead, MN, is home to Concordia College and Minnesota State University, Moorhead.

North Dakota State Univeristy enrolls over 12,000 undergraduate and graduate students; offers 98 bachelor's degree programs, 51 master's degree programs, and 40 doctoral and professional programs; and generates approximately $100 million in research funding annually. The Department of Athletics plays at the Division I level with football playing at IAA.

HNES currently offers a 30 credit Master of Science degree with options in Sport Pedagogy, Nutrition Science, Exercise Science, Sport and Recreation Management, and Public Health. We also offer a 36 credit entry level athletic training option. In addition, the College of Human Development and Education offers a Ph.D. in Human Development with three options: Wellness, Counselor Education, and Gerontology. The Wellness option is offered principally through HNES.

HNES offers a number of graduate teaching assistantships for both master's and doctoral students. Graduate stipends are $6,500 for master's students and $8,000 for doctoral students and include a tuition waiver worth approximately $5,000. Graduate students are considered half-time employees and typically work approximately 20 hours per week. We currently have cooperative agreements in which Concordia College, Valley City State University, Mayville State University, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, TNT Kid's Fitness, and Minnespota State Community Technical College at Fergus Falls sponsor and employ graduate assistants through NDSU.

Graduates of our program have had very positive experiences at NDSU and speak highly of the department and faculty. You can learn where former graduate students are employed and can contact current students or alumni by clicking on the appropriate link.

Again, please contact us if you desire additional information or are interested in applying for graduate education in HNES. The application for admission to graduate school can be found on the Graduate School web site and the application for an HNES graduate teaching assistantship can be found on this site.
