First Aid–CPR–AED Certification

First Aid/Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)/Automated External Defibrillator (AED) certification is obtainable through the Department of Health, Nutrition, and Exercise Sciences’ HPER 210 class (Responding to Emergencies).  It is offered a number of times throughout the course of the year in 8-week sessions.  Certification for First Aid is valid for a period of three years while certification for CPR/AED remains current for a period of one year.  Both certifications are endorsed by the American Red Cross.

HPER 210 classes are required as either a prerequisite to more advanced medical training or as a stand-alone requirement for various majors in the College of HDE.  The purpose of this type of certification training is to provide those enrolled in the HPER 210 class with the knowledge and skills necessary to help sustain life and minimize the potential grave consequences of injury and/or sudden illness until advanced medical help arrives.

HPER 210 classes are offered in two different formats – the 8-week session format and the weekend format.  The 8-week sessions (mentioned above) are for the student who has no previous training or certification with First Aid, CPR, and the use of an AED.  The 8-week sessions are offered via campus connection at times corresponding with registration sessions for the fall and spring semesters.

The HPER 210 weekend training session is designed as a Review/Challenge Course, and is specifically set-up for  (and available to…) the student who has a previous certification from the American Red Cross, the American Heart Association, or the National Safety Council.  It is important to note that registration for the weekend course takes place with Distance and Continuing Education at NDSU, and that instructor permission is required to enroll.
