COACHING CERTIFICATION Students completing a Physical Education major or minor are qualified to coach in every state. Fifteen states do not require coaches education, 36 states require coaches education for non-teacher coaches, 15 states require coaches education for all coaches, and 32 states accept the completion of the American Sport Education Program (state-by-state requirements) coaching certification program as qualification for a coaching position. The Department of Health, Nutrition and Exercise Sciences at NDSU offers the American Sport Education Program and certification in HNES 211- Successful Coaching. At the completion of HNES 211, students complete a certification exam. Upon successful completion of the exam, students will receive coaching certification. Students who desire a job in the coaching profession should consider taking some of the following courses: First Aid/Prevention and Care of Injuries Sport Skill Analysis Conditioning and Physiology Administration and Management Psychology and Sociology Methods of Coaching Nutrition
