Introduction

The conference will be hosted by the Institute of Forest Genetics (IFG) — a unit of the USDA, Forest Service, Pacific Southwest Research Station, with branch offices and laboratories in Albany, Davis, and Placerville, California. A brief introduction to the research program at the Institute is available here.

We are providing conference facilities at the North Tahoe Conference Center, Kings Beach, Lake Tahoe, California, and will submit to attendees detailed lists of lodging and dining options close to the Conference Center. Lake Tahoe, world-renowned for its cold, clear waters, size (19 x 35 km), and average depth (305 m), is situated in the heart of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, straddling the States of California and Nevada. The crest of the Sierra Nevada is nearby, providing opportunities to observe conifer and hardwood rusts from a representative range of forest genera, species, and habitats that occur in western North America.

Within a 10-hour bus ride, conference participants can be exposed to a near-complete sampling of the forest tree rust fungi of California. Following an all-day field trip, we will host an evening banquet at the Institute of Forest Genetics in Placerville, one hour west of Lake Tahoe along Highway 50. Nearby is the Placerville Nursery, where the white pine blister rust resistance screening program is carried out by the Forest Service’s Region-Five Genetic Resources Program.

Reno/Tahoe and Sacramento International Airports are convenient to the Conference. A variety of ground transportation options are available from each, including bus, taxi, limousine, shuttle, and rental car service. Lake Tahoe is 2 hours from the State Capitol, Sacramento, which is the major metropolitan, cultural, and population center in the Central Valley of California, 1 hour from Reno, Nevada, and 3.5 hours from San Francisco.

Muir Woods, a popular destination for visitors seeking immersion in the majesty and biology of the coast redwood, Sequoia sempervirens, is on the west slopes of Mt. Tamalpais, 40 minutes north of San Francisco; for those interested, tour buses are available on a regular schedule from San Francisco. Airplane, train, bus, and limousine transportation connect the major population centers. Visitors from Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas will feel at home in this region, with its comprehensive diversity of languages, cultures, and cuisines.
