Text: Introduction to Probability and Statistics (12th edition) by William Mendenhall, Robert Beaver, and Barbara Beaver
Course Description: Frequency tables, histograms, probability, well-known probability distributions, one and two sample tests of hypotheses, confidence intervals, and contingency tables.
Course Objective: To introduce students to frequency tables, histograms, probability, well-known probability distributions, one and two sample tests of hypotheses and confidence intervals for both means and proportions, and contingency table analysis for discrete data so that they may be able to identify and apply these methods to real-life situations.
Homework: Homework problems from the text book will be assigned during lectures. Although homework will not be graded, you are expected to keep up with the homework problems. The problems might be used as a possible source for quiz and exam questions. More importantly, doing homework problems is a vital part of learning statistics.
Quizzes: There will be 7 quizzes for the semester and they will be given on Mondays during the labs (i.e. WALS 204).
Minitab: The remaining labs (in IACC 114) will be devoted to computer assignments which utilize the statistical software package called Minitab.
Exams: There will be four exams during the semester. These tests are tentatively scheduled for 9/20, 10/18, 11/15, and 12/15.  You will be allowed one 8.5 x 11 inch sheet of paper with anything you wish to put on it for each exam.
Final Exam: The final exam is test #4 and will be given on Thursday, December 15 from 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.  This exam is not comprehensive.
Make-up Policy:

Pre/Post-due-date coursework (i.e. quizzes, Minitab projects, and tests) will be allowed at the discretion of the instructor assuming the student provides the instructor with a legitimate excuse.  Pre-due-date coursework will be graded "as is" with no penalty.  However, the following grade will be given for all types of post-due-date coursework:
post-due-date-grade = minimum{your score, class median}.
Grading Policy: Quizzes - 10%, Minitab Assignments - 10%, Exam #1 - 20%, Exam #2 - 20%, Exam #3 - 20%, Exam #4 - 20%
Grading Scale: The following scale is guaranteed.
A [90, 100], B [80, 90), C [70, 80), D [60, 70), F [ 0, 60)
Special Needs: Any student with disabilities or other special needs, who needs special accommodations in this course, is invited to share these concerns or requests with the instructor as soon as possible.
Academic Honesty Statement: All work in this course must be completed in a manner consistent with NDSU University Senate Policy, section 335: Code of Academic Responsibility and Conduct (http://www.ndsu.nodak.edu/policy/335.htm).
Attendance: Attendance is strongly recommended. Although not required, it might be used as one of the factors that influence the final grade in "borderline" cases. Also, at times, the material presented in class may vary from that presented in the text. Thus, class attendance and class notes are very important.
Incompletes: University and Departmental policy will be followed on incomplete grades.
Provision: The instructor reserves the right to make changes to this syllabus and or the course outline at any time during the semester.
