Spring Semester 2009
Please check this page often for announcements of upcoming tests, assignments, cancellations, or other material you'd probably like to know.
Jan. 21--This week we'll finish the development and history of graphic design. Friday we'll begin work using InDesign software. To prepare, study this tutorial.
Jan. 26--Today we'll be completing the InDesign beginning tutorial from Friday. Last week we also looked at a little design history, so this week we'll look at a little research in visual perception--how our mind tell us what we see (and it's not always what's there!). Next week, as noted in the syllabus, I'll be in London to work on an exchange program between NDSU and a university there. I'll have some assignments for you to do next week in place of class, as well as a guest lecture one day. By Friday, I'll let you know what will be happening
Jan. 30--I'll be out of town next week, as noted in the syllabus, but Monday we'll have a guest lecturer, Lisa Gulland-Nelson. She has a media background, and so will be talking about internships and portfolio preparation. Please do her the courtesy of coming to class, even though I won't be there. We don't have class Wednesday or Friday, but work on Exercise Two, typopgraphy. Due Monday.
Feb. 23--This week we'll discuss design tools of emphasis and contrast. Friday we'll have our first Photoshop exercise. Due today: newsletter exercise. Due Wednesday: two design examples in which you identify techniques discussed in class, proximity, similiarity, continuity, closure, and design tool of emphasis. Next Monday we'll review for the midterm, set for Friday, March 6.
April 3--Well, after three weeks off, I vaguely remember having a design class. We'll begin again Monday to become reacquainted. Here's the plan for the rest of the semester. We won't have time to do all the InDesign and Photoshop exercises. But we will do the flyer exercise and one or two others. I will demonstrate Photoshop Exercise Four in class, but won't have time to demonstrate exercises five and six. You'll have to use the self-guided tutorials to do these on your own, and hand in for grading. I still think we can cover most of the things you'll need to know for good publication design. We'll just have to do it more quickly.
April 16--Here are upcoming deadlines: Flyer exercise, Monday, April 20. Photoshop exercise five, Friday, April 24. Photoshop exercise six, Friday, May 1. Our last assignment, the magazine, will be done in groups.
April 22--Here are the (randomly assigned) groups for the magazine assignment:
Group One: Martha Bartels, Todd Deutsch, Briana Hanson
Group Two: Allison Benson, Kira Gilbraith, Chantel Joyce
Group Three: Jonathan Biersbach, Janae Hagen, Joshua Kary
Group Four: Trevor Fortin, Alexander Horab, Brittani Mulvaney
Group Five: Edeleen Lunjew, Thomas Mulholland, Shalindra Rathnasinghe
Group Six: Joshua Nelson, T.J. Perry, Sarah Schmidt
Group Seven: Heidi Schuer, Matthew Thomspon, Mark Rivenburg
Group Eight: Stephanie Shea, Zach Smith, Annie Wohl, Nataleeya Baruwa
Note: Much of this work is done during class lab sessions. Attendance will be graded; if you are absent, you can count it as part of your free skip days (if you have any left), but keep in mind you'll also be letting down the rest of the group. Each group member should save work on a flash drive from lab day to lab day, so if someone is missing, the project will still be available to work on.
May 5--We'll need to make a change to this week's class schedule, as I've promised to introduce Robert Littlefield at an award presentation Wednesday afternoon. So our class Wednesday, May 6, will become the "study day" instead of Friday. Friday, on the other hand, we WILL meet, 3-4, to review for Monday's final exam.
Sorry for the inconvenience, but we'll still get everything done!
