Introduction
We created this web site in Composition Theory with Dr.
Kevin Brooks. The purpose of it is to help new graduate
instructors of composition learn a little bit about
composition theory and its application in the classroom. We
have tried to answer some of the most common questions that
we think may be raised about composition theory and give the
reader a sense of where the approaches both intersect and
differ. Also included are some model assignments from other
instructors here in the English department labeled by the
theoretical camp which we think they are most closely
aligned. The hope is that the new instructors can use the
information on theory along with the sample assignments and
exercises to build a core pedagogy for their first-year
composition sections.
We divided this handbook into four sections:
Composition Theory Camps, Composition Theory Chart,
Frequently Asked Questions, and Sample Assignments. In
Composition Theory Camps, we briefly discuss what the
different camps are. The Composition Theory Chart is
a chart of the different camps and the key ideas behind
them. In the Frequently Asked Questions section, we
responded to ten FAQs about composition theory. The Sample
Assignments/Exercises section contains different assignments
that instructors in the English department contributed and
can be used in English 110 and/or English 111. Click on the
links to the left to go to the respective sections.
