6. What is good writing? Or, is writing an art, a science, a knack? None of the above? A bit of each? Can we even teach writing?
Cognitivists believe that good writing is writing that has gone through the writing process--click here for a discussion of process.They also feel that good writing is "real-world" writing. In her textbook, Flower 'includes a concern for consulting reports and proposals as well as ordinary academic research reports--'the real world of college and work (Berlin 684).Cognitivists do feel that writing can by taught. We can teach, or at least show, students how to become problem solvers and goal setters. We can also teach them the different parts of the writing process and stress that students work through their own process. |
