Textbook:

Engineering Mechanics: Statics,
by R. C. Hibbeler, 9th edition, Prentice-Hall, NJ, 2001

Objectives:

a) To analyze stationary rigid bodies under the action of forces.
Detailed objectives are given in the notes for every topic.
b) To develop other important skills such as problem-solving,
critical thinking, self-learning, and teamwork.

Grading:

Homework + Projects + Leadership + Portfolio: 35%
Daily Quizzes (RQ, CQ, AQ):                            10%
Quizzes + Mid-term Exam:                                 35%
Final (December 11, Thursday):                         20%
If you have any questions or concerns about the grading criteria, please see me right away, but definitely before September 15, 2003.
Contract Scale (in which it is possible for everyone to get an A):
90% A
80% and < 90% B     The grading scale may be
70% and < 80% C      curved down slightly, but it
60% and < 70% D     will not be curved up.

General Information:

 

 

1. Reading Quizzes (RQs), Concept Quizzes (CQs), and Attention Quizzes (AQs) will be given in almost every class period.
2. Homework will be assigned in almost every class period and will normally be due in the next class period.
3. Quizzes will be given periodically.
4. Every student must keep a course portfolio. You can earn up to 30% of the final grade by keeping it up to date with homework, projects, and class participation work.
5. Mid-term and Final examinations will be cumulative.
6. Attendance Policy: Students will be allowed to make-up homework assignments
and daily quizzes for up to three missed days. Those who miss less than three days will get bonus points. Students will be allowed to drop the lowest score on one regular quiz. This will include a regular quiz missed due to absenteeism.

8. Academic Honesty: All work in this course must be completed in a manner consistent with NDSU Senate Policy, Section 335: Code of Academic Responsibility and Conduct.
